Marieva Davila will be performing this Sunday, January 21, 2024 at 3 pm as part of the Flamenco Dance Company Maria Serrano, at the show “Alma de Mujeres” & “Tablao Under The Neon Palms”
“Alma de Mujeres” is one of Maria Serrano’s productions. Compañia Maria Serrano performs an excerpt version at the El Mocambo. A dance and music production that explores how women experience loneliness, self-worth, and freedom through the language of Flamenco. This performance aims to display what it means to go beyond the boundaries of what womanhood is typically defined as. Maria used her emotional journey of womanhood as a background for her choreographic process. Using the emotional themes of loneliness, self-worth, and freedom, she has created a fusion between these chosen themes and the typical themes of Flamenco (such as strength and empowerment).
After the intermisión, Compañía Maria Serrano will take you to an Authentic Tablao scenery. A tablao is where flamenco shows are performed, and tablao is the term used for the platform floor or venue where a flamenco dancer dances. Maria, her dancers and musicians make you go beyond the barriers of language and find connection and community within the language of dance and music.
Maria Serrano
“Maria Serrano” was born in Seville (Spain). From her earliest childhood, she was taught flamenco by Seville’s best and most famous teachers. José Galván, Los Gitanillos de Bronce, Juan Manuel, and Farruco, to name just a few; early on, her sensitivity and power were recognised. She soon travelled half the world with famous ensembles such as Meme Menjibar, Javier Barón, Carmen y Carmelilla Montoya, and Antonio “El Pipa”.
In 1993, André Heller chose her for his production “Magneten”, and in that show, she enchanted the audience in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for six months. The Austrian “NEWS” even named her the “Voodoo Queen” of flamenco. From 1995 until 1998, Maria Serrano toured with different companies all over Europe. For the Bienal de Arte Flamenco. In 2000, she founded her company: “Compañia Maria Serrano”. She presented in her hometown of Seville, “RITMO Flamenco-Cubano”, with Choreographer and good friend Manolo Marin, one of the most renowned in his field. In 2001, the company produced “Entre Flamencos”; in 2002, Maria Serrano presented her own interpretation of the Carmen myth for the first time. In 2004, she followed “FlamenTango,” which was presented at the prestigious Budapest Spring Festival. In 2007, she presented her first solo production called “Flamenco por derecho” and the show “Balkan Flamenco” with Hungarian musicians and dancers from the Hungarian National Ballet. In 2010, she produced “Intuición” dancing together with her sister Alba. In 2011, the solo performance “Flamenco recital” was performed. In 2013, the famous production FlamenTango was returned in “Volver a FlamenTango”, which toured Europe and North America.
